Stories…Memories…Memorial Day
A large part of what I do involves listening. I often get the privilege to hear stories and memories from people’s lives.
And, of course, they’re all different. Sometimes, when I ask a person to tell me his story, he will talk about growing up – family – line of work. At other times the story will be short…some people just aren’t talkers.
But it always comes back to memories. Memory is such a powerful thing because it enables us to define our place in the world. One of the most heartbreaking things in the world is to see a person who simply can’t remember very much anymore. They will begin to tell a story (with their eyes twinkling and a smile). But then, memory fails them – and the twinkle becomes a vacant stare.
God has given us this wonderful gift called memory. As your pastor and friend, let me advise you to access your memory bank often. Celebrate the story of you…and those who have deeply impacted you. Yes, every story is different…but they’re all equally valuable.
Over this past week, I’ve been hearing about memories of loved ones who have served our nation. I’ve thought about the wars they’ve endured and how much their lives were endangered. But they loved America enough to die for her. And unfortunately, many have made that sacrifice. There are others who have proudly served our nation and have retired. Now, they rest from their labors…but we remember them still.
I love listening to your stories. And every time I hear one, I come away inspired and/or challenged.
This coming Sunday, our church will pause to honor our veterans – those who have served this great nation upon which God has shed His grace. I’m so honored to have Colonel Ben Findley share with us in worship this Sunday. Ben’s life has been, and remains, dedicated to serving America. Make plans to be in church this Sunday as we remember the stories of those who have served in order that we may remain free.
Blessings to you. Pastor Bobby
